Escape Vehicle no.4

1996

In the summer of 1996 four dust-sheets are taped together to form an envelope of lightweight polythene. Attached to this with lengths of string is a boiler-suit. The air in Oxfordshire countryside is still. A blowtorch is lit and its flames are directed into the envelope. The volume of see-through sheeting inflates and begins to take shape as a billowing cube of hot air. The balloon rises from the ground and, as the blowtorch continues to burn, begins to pull on its tethers. The strings are released and the overalls lift off the grass and slip into the air. Silently they rise through the afternoon sky. Fast becoming a black speck, the vehicle disappears behind the tree-lined horizon.
